“My employer suggested that I pump in the women's restroom. I replied that I would be happy to do that if the CEO would like to prepare his lunch there as well. It's ridiculous for a nursing mom to go through the process of sterilizing every part of the pumping apparatus and then have to finish the process in a public bathroom.”
—“Content Mom” in Virginia1
We grow up in school and we grow old at work. We spend a good portion of our lives there. Most of us are unaware of the powerful ways in which our classrooms and our workplaces shape us. The health impacts of hidden gender, age, and body biases in school and workplace design may last a lifetime.
When new working mothers are forced to hide out in restrooms or broom closets to pump milk, they feel like outcasts on the job. The design of our workplaces reflects powerful messages about who in the social hierarchy is important and who is not. Whether we're conscious of them or not, these messages can have profound influences on our daily lives. The design of work environments for traditionally male- or female-dominated professions such as firefighting and nursing has not kept pace with changing demographics, disadvantaging those who dare to break out of the norm. The same is true in the civic realm, where secret biases in the design of courtrooms and capitols empower some while disempowering others. In such high-stress environments, disadvantaging by design can be all the more demoralizing.
